This fall, we will welcome our youngest learners (TK-1st grade) to our new building—Ledges Elementary! In preparation for the 2023-24 school year, we would like to provide some tips to families to practice independence with your child, so they are ready for school.
🍎 Practice having your child go to the bathroom independently. Practice wiping, pulling on/off clothing (as well as snaps, zipping, and buttoning pants), and washing hands by themselves.
🍏 Provide your child with a non-preferred task (such as cleaning, doing a work task), and practice staying engaged in that assignment for 5 minutes.
🍎 Set a timer for 20 minutes and practice eating a meal without getting up, using utensils, and opening packages or drinks independently.
🍏 Provide your child the time and opportunity to put on their coats/sweatshirts, zipping them up, and putting their shoes on independently.
🍎 Provide your child the opportunity to follow multi-step directions independently. For example, “First I need you to put on your coat, then your shoes, and lastly, get in the car.”
🍏 Start a bedtime routine with your child! Start by going to bed by reading a book with your child and limiting screen time. Turn off lights and minimize distractions/sounds at an early bedtime. Your child needs lots of sleep for their bodies and brains to grow!
We hope you can try out these strategies as you prepare your child for the upcoming school year! We’re excited to welcome our new students to Ledges in a few short months!
